Construction of New Strategic Main

A £1.4m scheme to build a new strategic main at St Mary's Bay is being launched by Veolia Water. Work is due to begin in early February.

The pipeline will improve security of supply in the area and is part of a wider upgrading of the mains network across Romney Marsh.

The scheme will involve the construction of 1.6kms of new pipeline and is due to be completed in June.

Chris Taylor, Head of Capital Investment & Asset Management at Veolia Water Southeast, said a comprehensive programme involving both the building of new mains and the replacement of older mains had been planned.

He said: "This is the final phase of an extensive £33m capital investment programme which we have undertaken over the past five years. The programme included the earlier construction of some 13kms of mains on Romney Marsh.

"The new main will give us additional flexibility in moving water and will help us ensure security of supply to all our customers."

Temporary traffic lights on the A259 at St Mary's Bay will be needed to allow the work to be completed and advance notice of this will be given.

Chris added: "We are working closely with KCC Highways and Kent Police to keep any traffic disruption to the minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused and emphasise that work will be completed as soon as possible."

The strategic main will be constructed using 400mm diameter pipes and is designed so that the direction of flow can be reversed, giving maximum flexibility in operation.

Pipes are being laid in trenches around one metre deep which are backfilled as individual sections are completed to minimise any disruption.

A very short stretch of the pipeline will cross a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Veolia Water is working with Natural England to reduce any impacts and to ensure that wildlife is not disturbed.

Enterprise Managed Services has been appointed as contractor for the project. An Enterprise helpline for enquiries on the work will be available tel: 0800 521660. The Veolia Water helpline is 0845 888 5 888.
