In the Community

Our goal is to work with and support communities, charities and government towards improving the quality of life.

Veolia Water UK companies give extensive support to the communities in which they operate and actively encourage employees to become involved in local community initiatives. All the water companies work with the police, local authorities and the local media to raise awareness of doorstep crime.

We are long-standing supporters of the charity WaterAid, which funds projects in 15 of the poorest countries of the world to provide clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education. For example, Veolia Water Southeast customers have donated in the region of £50,000 since 2002, enabling the charity to bring safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education to 3,000 people. Staff activities to raise money for the charity included organising the annual Ricky Road Run race, recycling mobile phones and printer cartridges, and sponsored dress-down days, with the company matching the amounts raised.

In November 2010, Daniel Phillips, who works for Veolia Water at Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water, won the opportunity to visit water and sanitation projects in Bangladesh with WaterAid.

Representing Veolia Water on the WaterAid Supporters' Trip to Bangladesh, Daniel said he felt compelled to apply for a place after travelling in India in 2008: "During my trip to India I noticed that while I was urged to only drink bottled water, the local people had to use open rivers to wash, and drink from," said Daniel. "It made me appreciate WaterAid's vision that everyone should have access to safe water & sanitation. When I heard about the trip to Bangladesh, I saw it as an opportunity to return to the sub-continent in order to do something constructive to help the lives of others in a developing country."

KitAid is a charity set up by Veolia Water Central employee, Derrick Williams MBE, following a WaterAid trip to Tanzania in 1998. During the trip he witnessed barefooted children in remote villages playing with'footballs' made of tied string and plastic bags. Amazed at their reaction to his wearing his favourite football shirt, on his return to the UK he set about obtaining kit and equipment for them. Ten years on, KitAid has grown, with Graham Taylor OBE as its Patron and many volunteers. Last year the charity sent 27,000 kits to children and adults in 30 different countries. Veolia Water Central supports the charity by providing an operational base and professional expertise.
